Angry Yet another Quake3 related one

Hi all... I hope you can help me with this one, I've trying to figure it out for two days now before posting here. Here it goes:

I recently installed Quake3 on my computer (3 days ago) and the first thing I noticed was that the release candidate install I had (1.32b) did not started the game, in the console I got the error of a problem with the console ttys (did not understand it quite well). So I installed a previous version (1.30) which worked. Before continuing I assume you would be asking on what system I am running it, GL version, drivers, etc. Here is my info for that porpouse:

·OS Red Hat 9
·X version 4.3.0
·Video card: Radeon 9500 128 Mb (FireGL 2.9.6-XF4.3.0)
·Sound card: SB Live! Value (via OSS, I haven't got ALSA to work, yet )
·RAM 512 Mb DDR 333

But if you could run the game, then what your question is? You may be wondering.

Well, first I do not see it critical to play on the Internet, thus I do not care of what version I install.
Second, an error (hang) occurs after a few seconds of initiating a game. At firts I thought it stopped responding, but after several runs and patience I saw that simply the game would stop rendering at the speed it was supposed to, getting about 1 frame every 10-20 secs (luckily, some times it takes up to a minute). But before the indefinate hang The game has one or two major stutter ones (same as the other, but with the frame interval about 3-5 secs) and then recovering the normal speed. This would happen once or twice before the indefinate hang problem. To shut the game down I have to do a ctl+alt+F1-6 to do a killall quake3.x86 command. I have looked at the console after doing this to see if there is anything wrong with the game, but... No. There is nothing wrong, no error given, just a final line recieved signal 15

I know this could as well be caused by the beta nature of the graphic drivers. Anyhow, I will try to update my version to something higher than 1.32b (which I doubt it exists) and may be the problem with this version could be related to my OS version? (running RH 7.3 with version 1.32b was no prob, also with FGL drivers).

As usual, any help you community guys could provide me with, will be very appreciated!

Thanks
