Quake3 again.

I have got Quake3 working in a fasion. Or not.
Originally I had it so sound wouldn't work, but the game would run fine, just silent. Now I have sound working, bu the game crashes right at the start (when the level starts, it renders about 5 frames, then freezes)
Here's my system:
ECS K7S5A with onboard sound (using the Intel ICH OSS module)
ATI Radeon 32mb SDR running with DRI
XF86 4.3
Gentoo Linux, everything current
Kernel 2.4.20-xfs (A gentoo provided tree, with XFS support - used as my root FS, and yes I regret it now)
The last thing echoed to the console is:
Nukes^7 entered the game
Any of you had these problems?

^bump^
Any one else had this or can point me somewhere to look it up? I've already tried the faq on idsoftware.com and that was no help.
