Quake3 help please

I am trying to get quake 3 running with SuSE 9.0, I have the latest NVidia drivers install and compiled for the kernal. Installed quake 3 and everytime I try to run it I get this error:

----- FS_Startup -----
Current search path:
/root/.q3a/baseq3
quake3/baseq3

----------------------

Running in restricted demo mode.

----- FS_Startup -----
Current search path:
/root/.q3a/demoq3
quake3/demoq3

----------------------
----- CL_Shutdown -----
-----------------------
----- CL_Shutdown -----
-----------------------
Error: Couldn't load default.cfg

I am new to linux and I figure this is probably something really simple, I just can't see it.
Thanks for the help

how about running it as non-root? and if that doesnt work, create an empty file called default.cfg in the directory where its looking. maybe thatll work.

if you download the latest quake3 patch Quake 3 Arena 1.32b Linux Point Release
it should work after installing the patch. atleast it did for me.

you must put the file PAK0.PK3 in ~/.q3a/baseq3 from your windows installation CD and that will solve your problem
