Question xmms /dev/dsp in use

XMMS from user login tells me that /dev/dsp is in use. Ive checked perms (666 - interesting number) and ARTS server is on for system app sounds. Any ideas on how do I find out what else is using this device? Or, how to keep both up together?

Thanx in advance

well if arts is running and you like having silly sound effects for no reason in KDE then i presume that dsp IS in use, i would guess that there is an arts plugin for xmms, and if there is, use it... if not, turn the arts server off and it should be fine.

Thanx, Kewpie - as usual, you're right! I'll solve the problem the REALISTIC way - -I'm going to march down to my local software store and spend 200 euros on Windows 2000, so I won't be bothered by these obnoxious open-systems problems.

(Er - maybe Longhorn?).

Good move m8,

just make sure to get some software with it that's Win98 or XP
specific, or requires FixPak2 rather than 3, so you can have
your proprietary problems :D

Cheers,
Tink

Depending on your soundcard, you can allow it to play more than 1 sound file at a time, meaning that you can have the default sounds, and still use XMMS to listen to your music. I can't remember for sure, but I think the option is in the aRTS control panel. Also, you may want to try Acid's advice about the plugin, it sounds familiar but I am not at my box to run you through it step by step. If you go into pref's though, you can configure which output you'd like to use.

Hope that helps a bit

If you look in the preferences for xmms (press ctrl+p) the first page at the bottom has the bit that MasterC is on about. I have mine at OSS but there are others and on your box there should be the aRTS ouput plugin in the drop down box. If its not there then head on over to xmms.org and look in their plugins section.
