xmms problem ... sometimes /dev/dsp busy

Hi all
I have installed xmms.
When I start it. Some times it give me following message
** WARNING **: oss_open(): Failed to open audio device (/dev/dsp): Device or resource busy

and xmms won't play
so I have to restart the machine to make it work.

and strange thing is mplayer gives same message like:
/dev/dsp busy when xmms cracks.

I can't figure out since sometimes it works perfectly and sometimes
it just cracks

I tried to search the earlier posts but
I coudn't find hint to fix my problem.

please help
thanks
Kiran

the errormessage means that at the moment some other process is using the mixer, in other words: something else is already producing sound. If there is no obvious sound producre, just restart your sound system and it should be freed up.

Or install a mixer like esound, artsd or dmix so you can have more than one thing playing sound at a time.
If you're using alsa, I believe dmix comes as standard & you just have to set up the config file properly
