[SOLVED] why does gimp need to export jpeg?

I'm used to saving images edited by Gimp in jpeg format. Since I upgraded to Fedora 18 from Fedora 16 when I try to "Save As" it does not show jpeg as an option. I have to do "export" to jpeg. Why is this necessary? I know it's not a big deal but I'm curious. Thanks ahead of time.

Simple answer: Since JPEG is not the native format of GIMP the developers thought that it would be more logical that saving as JPEG is more an export than a save. Just a cosmetic change, nothing else.

Yes, it's a change in the most recent version. GIMP now only saves to its native archiving format, which supports all the data necessary for further editing. All other file formats have to be exported now.

Personally I think it's a good thing. It helps you avoid accidentally overwriting your original with an un-editable format.
