What's a good audio editting program?

I've been looking for a good audio editting program, but still can't find anything like what I used to use back in my Windows days. Basically I want to be able to play music off my computer and record back from my mixer. I've tried a few different programs, but none of them meet my needs. On windows I used Cool Edit Pro. I'm looking for something like that. Thank you!

Edit: Guess I should have searched the forums first. I'm gonna try out audacity.
PS: found my answer here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=104540

Glad you answered your own question. I made the same transition (Cool dit Pro => Audacity) and I'm delighted with the way it works. The only problem I've encountered is that recording through the soundcard doesn't work the way I want it to: sund it not continuous, but sounds like it's been put through the shredder (stops and starts about 20x per second). I haven't tried yet, but from what I've read, a low latency kernel should solve that.

I wish more people would answer their own questions when they find answers, it really helps. As far as Audacity goes, I love it. It works perfectly for what I use it for (playing and recording from my turntables and mixer), and it's much faster than Cool Edit Pro, even when I have 6 FireFox windows open, a konsole, gaim and LimeWire. In windows, my computer would slow to a crawl when CEP was open with only one mp3 loaded and LimeWire with a couple dls going. Now that I found audacity I think I've eliminated my final excuse for windows (happy days, time for a beer!)

I have not yet been able to give up Goldwave in Windows because I rip a lot of vinyl, and I need the snap-pop filter. Have not found such a thing for Audacity, and with vinyl, it's not a luxury, it'a a neccessity.
