Question web cam is seen, but hangs software

I have been messing with my phillips webcam and have gotten most of the way toward getting it to be seen by Kubuntu 8.4.01:

But when i run cheese - kdetv - gqcam - or any other webcam app - the led comes on the camera, and the software displays a blank image - any attempt at accessing the software results in a hang.

CL apps give:

Code:
v4l2: oops: select timeout
This is the only real clue i have gotten - but have no idea where to set the timeout...

Thanks in advance (adThanksvance) for any and all help.
