vsftp strangeness

I have vsftpd running on my Fedora 2 machine...
I have been using Dreamweaver's built in ftp client to connect to that server..
for some reason the ftp server will fail, the problem is that it does not fail all the time.

for example if I try to upload a file it may fail but then I put the file up again and it will go.

The error I get is "... Dreamweaver encountered an internal data error."

I got it working

ok the problem is related to the modes: active vs. passive

I don't yet understand how each works but apprently active mode tells the ftp server to ask the client what port to open for the connection and passive mode tells the server to handle the port selection...

my firewall was causing the intermitten problem. I guess what was happeneing was that sometimes it hit an open (safe port) and sometimes it did not...
