Mplayer strangeness...
Hello, everyone. Something odd is happening with mplayer.
Whenever I try to play a video file (any format) as a normal user in anything other than full-screen, I get the following:
VO: [dxr3] Error opening /dev/em8300-0 for writing, trying /dev/em8300 instead.
VO: [dxr3] Error opening /dev/em8300 for writing as well!
However, as a normal user, I can play anything I want in full screen without the GUI, or I can play anything in any window size as root, with the GUI
I'm guessing that there's a permissions problem somewhere (or something missing in my config directory), but I have no idea where or what to do about it.
Any suggestions? Thanks very much in advance.

Well a good place to start would be to have a look at the permissions of /dev/em8300-0.

Sorry, I should've clarified to begin with: there is no em8300-0 in my /dev, visible or hidden.

i'd suggest not using dxr3 output then.... i'd assume this isn't a concious effort to use this output?

Yeah, don't let that "Member" tag fool you. Nearly a year into Linux, and I'm still as n00b as they come.
So, something tells me that there's something fundamental that I'm missing here. What should I be reading?
Thanks!

Well the manpage is always a good place to start. Look especially at the "-vo" option. Also the ~/.mplayer/config file is another thing you may want to look at.
