I have been using Redhat 8 and am a newbie. I burned redhat 9 on CDs. I am not sure if i want to upgrade to it yet. Many people have posted problems upgrading to redhat 9 from 8.
My system is a dual boot system with windows 2000.
I am not sure if I installed RH8 with LILO or GRUB. Anyone know any way I could figure this out. When the system boots I don't see LILO or GRUB printed on the screen. how do i figure it out and any advice or links on RH9. Thanks
Grub has some advantantages when updating your kernel over lilo. (somewhat more failsafe)
it doesn't matter which bootloader you install after or before upgrade ... the new boat loader will be installed on the mbr (master boot record) any way
RH v9 came out only a few months after v8, and I gave it a shot, but in my opinion, it turned out to be a waste of time. No significant additions/improvements, and overall it seemed to me to be more of a marketing move than a technological move. The bottom line is thatat least for me, it was really no different than v8. Maybe other people have had different experiences, but to me it was pretty much indistinguishable from v8. Along those lines, RH8 is a pretty good distro, and unless you have any compelling reason to change, you might want to consider staying where you are. (Or, if you're interested in upgrading, you might think about giving Slackware a spin. Slack rocks, that's all I can say.) -- J.W.
I've also heard of people having problems with upgrading to RH9,
If you are going to install RH9,
I would suggest wiping out RH8 and do a fresh install of RH9.
To tell if you are using GRUB, when the bootloader screen comes up, the GRUB screen says "GRUB" in the top left hand corner, and it has the GRUB version number there too.
Check out the bottom of the page of this link for an example of the GRUB screenshot.
