Upgrading xscreensaver on RH9

I've been reading this post about upgrading installed RPM apps by compiling from source.

Although this might apply to other apps in the future, I'm particularly thinking of xscreensaver, which is currently running (happily) on my RH9 system. Although I'm a great believer in "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", I really like the look of some of the new hacks (esp. GLMatrix ) in the current version (4.15), and would like to upgrade to it.

Problem is, according to, the RH9 RPM is stuck at the same version which came on the installation CDs (IIRC, about 4.07). I'd rather upgrade using RPM (in the hope that the application continues to run smoothly afterwards), but if this is not possible I'd probably have to compile the latest version from source.

Would I have to uninstall the existing RPM first, before compiling and installing the new version? Alternatively, how easy would it be to create an RH9 RPM from source?

Many thanks,
