Update a compiled kernel with rpm?
Hey there, I am new to posting to the forum, but I have read plenty of threads on here.
I have RedHat Ent. WS 3 installed. I am thinking about downloading the latest 2.4 kernel and compiling it and configuring it myself. The main reason for this is so that I can include only the things I need, and not all the extras that I don't need.
But I am wondering when a new version of the kernel comes out, like a fix for some security feature or what not. If I use the up2date and update the kernel using the RPMs it downloads, will it overwrite my configuration that I had when I compiled and configured the kernel? Would the new version then have the default configuration and not mine?
If it does keep my configuration and settings, how is it doing this?
Basically I want to keep the kernel updated and make sure it has the latest patches. Up2date is an easy program to use to keep it all updated.
In addition I have a Debian install on my laptop that I am wondering pretty much the same thing, except with deb files.
Thanks!
