Unable to print from Gimp + Turboprint

I have a Canon iP4000 printer, so I had to install Turboprint. Printing from GIMP was fine with older distros (with Gimp-Print enabled), but it is a nightmare with new Gutenprint (ver 5.0 rc2), either with Gimp 2.2.8 or 2.2.10. Gimp bugzilla claims that it is not their fault (printing is done with GimpPrint). TurboPrint says that the driver runs OK with other CUPS applications, as it is true.

But by now I am unable to print with this combo. The native driver included with newer versions of Gutenprint does not give quality printing, as does TurboPrint.

Any suggestion?
