tesseract charset load fails

Hi, can anyone explain why tesseract can't load the charset??

[peter@pedro-laptop Studienweg Deutsch Scans]$ tesseract LEKTION0001.TIF LEKTION0001.txt -l ger
Unable to load unicharset file /usr/share/tesseract/tessdata/ger.unicharset

I have done chown and chgrp on tessdata to peter. Permissions are rw

I tried with a very simple test1.tif, but no joy!

[peter@pedro-laptop Studienweg Deutsch Scans]$ tesseract test1.tif test1 -l eng
Tesseract Open Source OCR Engine
check_legal_image_size:Error:Only 1,2,4,5,6,8 bpp are supported:32
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
