tesseract-2.04 playing silly buggers

bash-3.1$ tesseract STR001.tiff -l eng
Unable to load unicharset file /usr/local/share/tessdata/eng.unicharset
bash-3.1$ ls -lh /usr/local/share/tessdata/eng.unicharset
-rw-r--r-- 1 dec users 0 2010-04-05 19:53 /usr/local/share/tessdata/eng.unicharset
bash-3.1$ ls -lhd /usr/local/share/tessdata/
drwxr-xr-x 4 dec users 4.0K 2010-04-05 19:53 /usr/local/share/tessdata/

There's the error. the tiff is the default output of imagemagick's conversion
convert myfile.jpg myfile.tiff
Whatever is up, it is clearly not the error I'm posting. This is a new compile on a slackware 12 box.

Code:
bash-3.1$ ls -lh /usr/local/share/tessdata/eng.unicharset
-rw-r--r-- 1 dec users 0 2010-04-05 19:53 /usr/local/share/tessdata/eng.unicharset
If you look closely you'll see that the "existing file" is a measly
0 bytes long. You'll need to separately download that file and place
it into /usr/local/share/tessdata/ instead of the placeholder.

Cheers,
Tink

Is that supposed to be a zero length file?
