samba issues

in have debian running a 2.6 kernel my issue is:

i used aptitude to install samba and swat and it worked fine. i later "purged" it in aptitude, and just recenty again added it via aptitude. however it doesnt seem to be working well anymore. everything seems to be in my inetd configuration, so everything should be running. however it doesnt show up on anyone's network, and i used to show up in the network of my debian box, however no longer.

when i used swat to try and add users to, it gave me an error asking if the users were in the UNIX password database, what the rack is going on here??
