samba installation problem

Hi,
I have a problem installing SAMBA on Slackware.
After ./configure the make command returns the following error:

/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i486-slackware-linux/3.3.4/../../../../i486-slackware-linux/bin/ld: cannot open output file bin/smbd: No such file or directory
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [bin/smbd] Error 1

Do you know how can I solve this problem?

Is it as simple as not running the ./configure as root so no permission to create the smbd executable?

I am logged in as root when I run the configure script
