Openwebmail question

Openwebmail users: I just installed openwebmail and testing it on the intranet. I have a problem with login, I get the error: "Password incorrect" even though I'm using the correct Linux password. I have confirmed openwebmail.conf has a line:-

auth_module auth_unix.pl

and auth_unix.conf lists

passwdfile_plaintext /etc/passwd
passwdfile_encrypted /etc/passwd

Not sure about the plaintext option but at least sure etc passwd is there and linux login is OK. Please someone help.

/usr/local/apache2/share/cgi-bin/openwebmail/etc/auth_unix.conf says (on Slackware) passwdfile_encrypted /etc/shadow.
