MySQL, errno 13

I have just reinstalled Slackware and then all my databases were lost. But I kept a backup of the .frm, .MYD and .MYI-files.

So I installed mysql 5.0.2 from source. It's up and working. I created the database and then the dir /usr/local/mysql/var/<database> were created.

I then unpacked the backup and copied all files into that directory. Then I again ran mysql and got the prompt. I typed "use <database>" and it worked. I tried "show tables" and that worked fine.

But then at the next step I got an error:
Code:
mysql> describe personRase;
ERROR 1017 (HY000): Can't find file: './operation_m/personRase.frm' (errno: 13)
I checked and all .frm-files are there (in /usr/local/mysql/var/<database>/) as well as .MYI and .MYD. Why can't mysql find it?

Are those files' permissions all set so the user mysqld is running as can at least read them (and of course, you'd run into trouble changing anything if it couldn't write to those files as well)?
