Mplayer Video Error

Whenever I try to play a video with Mplayer, I get this error:

Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device

I installed Mplayer along with multimedia codecs using Automatix. I'm still fairly new to Linux, so can someone give me a step by step fix?

Check your `~/.mplayer/config' file,
which should contain,
# Write your default config options here!
vo=xv
ao=alsa
