mplayer video output error

whenever i start mplayer and then try to play a file, it gives error could not initialize video output (-vo) or something similar to that.
any ideas? thanks in advance

try changing the video driver to use something else (like x11)

mplayer file_to_play -vo x11
mplayer file_to_play -vo xv
mplayer file_to_play -vo fbdev (for fb console)

At least one of this should work.

Make sure you have System V IPC compiled in your kernel if the above suggestions don't work.
