mplayer mutes but doesn't unmute

I occasionally accidentally hit 'm' while listening to a file in non-X with mplayer. mplayer reports 'mute: enabled' and mutes the sound, but when I hit 'm' again mplayer reports 'mute: disabled' but doesn't restore the sound. Changing volume doesn't help. No control in alsamixer or amixer restores sound. I have to use pactl set-sink-mute.

Why doesn't mplayer unmute?

Probably your mplayer gets lost in between PA and ALSA. I do not use PA, but if you use PA, aren't you supposed not to mess with underlying ALSA?

It seems that it calls PA to mute but not to un-mute, which is a mistake, not getting lost.

I don't see why not. I tried to forgo PA but something requires it.
