kmix mutes but won't change volume

In kmix, I can mute/unmute but the volume sliders don't seem to do anything. RealPlayer, Amarok, etc. produce sound, but kmix can only mute them, not change their volume. (gnomad2 says it is playing but never produces sound).

I can hear the sample sound in Administration>Soundcard Detection and in Control Center>Sound System. I am running Fedora Core5, and have set the kmix Master Channel to PCM, and maxed out all the sliders (they showed up maxed in alsamixer also). All kmix options are enabled.

I've looked at other links involving kmix problems but haven't found one like mine (whre muting stil works). Any help would be appreciated!

-Thanks! LloydM

Do you have alsamixer installed. From an xterm type alsamixer. You should see a GUI with ASCII slider bars. If they say MM at the bottom that means your sound is muted through ALSA, which is usually the case default when ALSA is installed (for some GOD AWFUL reason) once done unmuting all the channels and setting the sliders properly in alsamixer hit ESC.
