MPlayer install

Need help on how to install MPlayer. Have the codecs, fonts and skins: now what? OS is Suse 9.1, KDE desktop, Kafine and Xine. Need MPlayer to view .wmv files. Updated Kafine codecs to /usr/lib/win32 but still cannot view .wmv's. Get "xine Demix error".

Where did you get mplayer from? There is a rpm on http://packman.links2linux.org which should do the job.

Decompress the mplayer source to some directory (say /usr/local/src/mplayer.ver.xx), then at the console type
cd /usr/local/src/mplayer.ver.xx
./configure
make
make install

If you want the graphical interface too, you need to configure with --enable-gui (make sure you have all the gtk development packages installed in that case).

mplayer installs to /usr/local/bin, and after the installation can be started by typing "mplayer" at the console. To start the graphical interface, type gmplayer.

BTW the libxine which comes with SuSE hasn't wmv support. To have that you need to d/l xine source and compile it like mplayer (with the codecs installed). You may have to compile kaffeine again, too.

HTH
