Smile Mplayer Install, Etc.

Hi there,

I installed SuSE 8.2 on a new (rebuilt) Athlon XP1700+ machine and it came with mplayer version 0.90rc-4.25, as part of the distro.

I've attempted to play several file types that work on Windows in the .ASX, WMV and WMA formats (among others), but the only thing that seems to happen is that Kmplayer (KDE's frontend to mplayer) launches, and nothing happens after that.

I believe I saw somewhere that there is a command where I can copy the win32 codecs over to the Linux side in order for these .dll's to be available.

If I do that, should that take care of it, or are there other "tweaks" that need to be done in order for this to work.

(To be honest, it does baffle me that it doesn't work "out of the box" when it's installed as part of a complete distribution,on the appropriate file types, and that after a successful install of the OS, but that's my venting there!)

Thanks for any help!

Jim

SuSE is RPM based, isn't it? Have you searched rpmfind for an rpm package you can install.

Let's see, I installed this wonderful OS that was very popular and everyone else used, but the software I got was solitaire and mines and stuff like that. Just a very few tools for getting on the internet and doing e-mail, but it was very dangerous to use as it automatically spread worms and viruses, but that' my venting there.

you're trying to play Windows files, which require propriatory files from Microsoft, who refuse to license their use. It personally *doesn't* baffle me why a major organisation decides to safeguard themselves against possible legal action by removing these files.

I had checked rpmfind for other applications; just not for this one. I'll go there and see what I can find.

acid_kewpie:

I guess I need to rephrase my question: More and more websites out there are providing audio and video streams that are clearly for either WMV, WMA, ASF, ASX, etc. Such sites used to have alternative links that would use RealPlayer, but many websites have removed that option.

Getting these to stream is definitely working out to not be something that happens right after install.

If people, myself included, aren't able to access streaming audio and video in Linux, this will obviously make Linux much less of a usable desktop system for the average person (I include myself there, too).

I find more and more that I have to shut down Linux and boot up into Windows, just to be able to access TV and radio streams via the Internet.

Thanks everyone for your feedback!

Jim

I keep e-mailing them and chewing them out for limiting their customers to Windows users. A couple of times, I actually convinced them to stream mp3 which all platforms support.
