MPlayer; MY SiS Onboard sound WORKS!!!!!!!

I've been trying to get my onboard sound to work for some time. I have a SiS board with:

Intel 810 + AC97 Audio, version 0.21, 15:37:49 Mar 11 2003
PCI: Found IRQ 11 for device 00:02.7
i810: SiS 7012 found at IO 0xd800 and 0xdc00, IRQ 11
i810_audio: Audio Controller supports 2 channels.
ac97_codec: AC97 codec, id: 0x434d:0x4941 (Unknown)
i810_audio: only 48Khz playback available.
i810_audio: AC'97 codec 0 Unable to map surround DAC's (or DAC's not present), total channels = 2
PCI: Found IRQ 11 for device 00:0f.0
PCI: Sharing IRQ 11 with 00:02.2

Anyhow, I was board so I installed MPlayer, command only, started a DVD and for kicks plugged my speakers into the onboard port. And my sound works!!!!!!

And believe me I tried everything, hours, to get it to work with CD's and games but failed miserably.

So what does MPlayer install that would make my SiS 7012 work? I'll be looking into what is installed, but any time saved would be worth it.

Thanks

File associations!
in a KDE kong window, select settings, configure kong.
in the left pane you'll see file assoc. select it and choose "audio" in the right side list. and see if your mp3, oggs, wav files are opening with mplayer, you may have to add it to the "Application Preference order list"

Plus make sure the volume sliders on kmix and/or aumix are set to higher levels, the default setting on these are real LOW!!
