mp4 to wma

Hi again, I am looking for a program that can convert the mp4 nero format to standard wma.

Is there anyone who knows of a Linux program that can do the above?

Gyah. Why would anyone want to convert INTO .wma? Why not at least use mp3, which is a standardized format just about everything can play?

Still, if you must do it, ffmpeg should be able to handle it. Try this:

ffmpeg -i inputfile.mp4 -vn -acodec wmav2 -ab 128kb outputfile.wma

-vn disables any video streams.
-acodec=windows media audio format. There's also a wmav1 codec available.
-ab is the audio bitrate.

Hi David the H, Well I will explain why I was looking for the conversion. Back in the days when I didn't know any better I thought I could recode mp3 to a better format for my rather expensive hifi.

What I didn't realize that certain info is lost in the conversion to mp3, so changing to mp4 didn't really improve my situation.

Since going over more or less to LInux I have all the files converted to the mp4 format that nero uses.

I was wondering how those media files could be played on the computer without conversion if possible. After posting this thread, I found that real player can play them.

I thank you for your time.

Yeah, converting any format to another (compressed one) loses quality. WMA has horrible audio quality in my opinion, and I don't get why anydoby would like to use it -- unless the only place you'll be working in is a Windows machine that can only play wma. Even then I'd try to get something else on it..

Linux should be able to play mp4 files just happily (it does for me anyway), so what's the problem? Actually it's easier to get Linux play pretty much any file format than Windows..so if you care about sound quality, don't go converting anything, rather install the few required packages if needed to get your players play those formats. If you're using Xine engine, for example, install the Xine extra codecs library package from your distributions' reposity and have it play your files..
