memory usage

Hey all, I just finished installing aurora linux on a Sun Ultra 10. I was about upgrade some packages when I noticed that my memory usage was through the roof. This machine is a 466 mhz 64 bit Ultra 10, with 256 megabytes of RAM. When I'm logged into an X session, the memory usage is about 240 MB out of 256. If i kill the X server, the memory usage only goes down slightly to about 220. Any ideas?

Check out this link from sapphirecat which does a decent job of explaining how Linux memory management works -- J.W.
