Megahertz Modem Very Slow under Mandrake 9.2

I had MDK 9.0 installed and was very fast on the dial up connection on the Internet. MDK 9.1 was extremely slow so I returned to MDK 9.0. I have installed MDK 9.2 and find that it is also very very slow, pages time out and can not load, when viewing the details graph it is almost flat line with only very small spikes. My modem is a 3Com Megahertz 56K Cellular Modem. It works superbly with the Knoppix 3.1 and 3.2 "run from CD discs", it also works well with Suse 9.0 and Red Hat 8.0. Can anyone tell me what is wrong. When using the kppp setup wizard it allocates dev/modem but will also work under /tts0. The modem checks out OK under the "query modem" tag in kppp. Any Help???. Cheers.
