Unhappy Slow modem connection

I have recently connected a US Robotics 56K modem to /dev/ttyS0. Kppp talks to the modem OK, and dials my ISP, and then connects at 1200 baud (as seen in the log window).
It seems to not even try to negotiate a higher speed.
How can I get it to connect at a higher speed? I can get 45Kb with the same hardware using a different OS.

I'm using Mandrake 9.1, and have tried 57600 and 115200 as the device connection speed (in kppp).

Thanks in advance,
- TSloth

Does anyone have a specific suggestion for a parameter to set or something that tells the modem to try for a higher baud rate? I'm sure someone out there has encountered this before!

As an alternative, can someone give me a pointer to a table of commands that can be sent to the modem? There may be something to tell the modem not to attempt to connect below a certain rate.

Thanks,

file.

Check your firewall's configuration.
