Loading perl plugins in Gaim?

I got the gaim v1.2.1 package via APT on my deb system.

I've been told you can load plugins by tools>perl>load plugin in gaim -- however I see no option... and people also claim just put the .pl script in ~/.gaim/plugins.

I had no ~/.gaim/plugins folder so I made one and added the plugin, however it still doesn't load or work!

Any ideas?
EDIT:
It was compiled with disabled perl in configure... figures... nm

Oh, you compiled it with Perl disabled? I guess that's why then! :P Hehe...

Well, just in case you would like a handy link, here's one for using Perl plugins/scripts with Gaim:

Click.
