I am trying to install red hat linux to a server. It got formatted and now nothing I do works; I tried to install Win XP and I tried to reinstall Linux but it can not see the hard disks? I kno they r in correctly so I am kinda confused. I thought the scsi drivers would be on the cds? I have never installed Linux so I really need some help!!!!!
Thanks!
if you are running SCSI, then you have an addaptor, just like in windows you need the floppy with the adaptor drivers, but for linux not windows on them. that should alow the distro to load the drivers properly.
also post more info like the exact model/make of the motherboard, drivers, and adaptor you are using.
Ok it is a Gateway 960 Linux Server
It has this:
LSI U320 LVD 1- CHANNEL SCSI ARRAY CONTROLLER (520)
SEAGATE 36GB 10K RPM SCSI SCA HDD'S X2
MICRON 256MB PC 2100 DDR DIMM MEMORY
2.4 GHZ 533MHZ FSB SOCKET 604 XEON PROCESSOR 512K CACHE R1
OTHER:
SERVER COMPANION/UTILITY CD VER. 5.1
GW SERVER MGR 2.2
RED HAT LINUX 9 PRO
YOSIMITE TAPEWARE BACKUP
SEAGATE IDE TR5 TAPE BACKUP UNIT R0
TR5 TAPE CARTRIDGE
Now the only things I found that even remotely go with this machine are the packet of Red Hat Linux 9 cds; & books
I found Gateway cds for restoring XP PRO AND THE DRIVERS, AND APPS. I am not so sure they even go with this thing?
I found the Server Companion cd and the installing manager cd for it. I have tried installing the linux and it does diff each time one time it will say no drives found and then it may say it installed it? On reboot it sits there? So someone please help!!!
I am going insane here!!!
Thanks in advance
its a gateway. both dell and gateway have very good driver sites. goto the gateway site with the SSN and or other numbers needed for gateway to track that server and find all of the drivers for it.
worst case you will be able to identify the SCSI controller, can then go to the manufactures site and grab the linux drivers from there.
tried the drivers from Gateway and I even called GW & the Mnaufacturer of the hdd's. Seems that the drivers show up as not being the correct ones for it? Any ideas?
try running with Knoppix and see if it detects the hardware. if it does then run lspci and see what kind of chipset is being used by the controller. beyound that im at a loss sorry, still new to linux and hardware issues.
You say you are installing RedHat. Are you installing 9 or the Advanced/Enterprise versions? If you are having trouble getting the scsi adapter module, I would suggest a different RedHat version/update release. Usually, the higher the better for driver support.
