ld problems installing

I attempting to install some software, ld is complaining it can't find -lz. So I made sure it was installed and in the ld path.

Code:

ldconfig -p | grep libz
        libz.so.1 (libc6,x86-64) => /usr/lib/libz.so.1

But still it complains here is some output

/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lz
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[1]: *** [arrayTest3d.Linux.g++.g77.DEBUG.ex] Error 1
make: *** [test/BoxTools] Error 2

It wouldn't be the permissions on the file or one of the dirs in the path?

Or trying to compile a 32-bit executable?

I think that makes most sense. If you’re compiling a 32-bit executable, you need to have a 32-bit version of the library it links to (usually placed in /usr/lib32 or similar — research the “multilib” setup).
