problems installing custom 2.6.14 kernel (for SATA problems)

I followed the instructions for compiling a kernel for Debian in:
http://www.falkotimme.com/howtos/deb...pile/index.php
I compiled the 2.6.14 kernel, because I have been having S-ATA / IDE problems since I upgraded my hd to a SATA.

Kubuntu doesn't boot from it. I don't think it is an Ubuntu specific problem - rather something with the kernel or grub. Grub gives an error, I think error 13 and it says something about it not being an recognizable exec format. It has automatically made entries in grub, which seem quite valid. I did mkinitrd.

Has anyone seen this? What am I doing wrong?
