later kernel 2.6.17.1 as per README problem

Hi everyone,
I downloaded linux-2.6.17.1.tar.bz2 and in the README it states don't use the /usr/src/linux area, yet later on it does use this directory in some examples.
Anyway I put the untarred files in /root/src/linux-2.6.17.1 and did the "make mrproper" followed by the "make xconfig" and the "make". All this worked fine. I made sure Module support was entered and for all the NEW config stuff kept the defaults.
Then I tried "make install" and then I gort a problem!!

No dep found for kernel 2.6.17.1
mkinitrd failed
(mkinitrd -v -f /boot/initrd-2.6.17.1.img --ifneeded 2.6.17.1) at /usr/lib/libDrakX/bootloader.pm line 119.
make[1]: *** [install] Error 2

Can anyone spot the obvious mistake?
Thanks

In fact it turned out I had missed the "make modules" step. The README provided didn't mention this but I found it in the Kernel HOWTO. I followed that with the "make modules_install" and the "make install" and all was OK after updting lilo of course.
Thanks.
