When I select a file , right click and chose 'Compress filename.tar.gz' or 'Compress as' choosing any of the available options , I get a message box that says 'Compressing....' but it never completes. The status bar keeps indicating activity but that's it.

Any idea why this is happening or how I can troubleshoot it? How do I see what app is associated with this action?

How big is the file you are trying to compress? Have you tried compressing a text file to see if it completes?

THe first file I tried to compress was actually a directory with a few dozen text files. After waiting long enough to be convinced that it wasn't working, I cancelled it and archived it in ark in a minute or less. To confirm that the issue was with the 'compress' action in konqueror, I tried to compress a few other text files ranging in size from about 1k to 10k. I had the same result each time. I get a message box popping up that says 'Compressing...' with a status bar that makes it look as if something is happening but it never completes.
