how to compress a directory?

Any pointers to a FAQ on zipping files and directories in KDE is greatly appreciated.

man gzip
man bzip2
man tar

Those are probably the best place to start. Simple example would be to create a tar archive for a directory

tar -czvf myarchive.tar /my/dir
