After compiling a 2.6.14 kernel on slackware 10.2 (in order to enable direct rendering on my intel 855gm card) I face a strange problem in kde 3.5. Sound (IEC958 AC97) works perfectly in console and under e.g. fluxbox.

However, under KDE I'm confronted with a big window in the middle of the screen with the text "Volume" showing a progress bar indicating 0%. The window cannot be closed or moved.

Also, in Kmix the master volume appears muted. I may play an mp3 and can hear it as long as I keep dragging the master volume using the mouse, but as soon as I release, it goes back to 0%. Same thing happens when I try "alsactrl restore". Also, Kmix is unkillable, even using SIGTERM. Has anyone seen this before?

Got it sorted out. I made the mistake of compiling Dell Laptop support into my kernel without checking. This is for Inspiron 8000 machines only. Mine is a Latitude. Now it runs great.
