Curiosity killed the cat it seems

Here is what I did: I clicked in Konqueror on the entry "/dev/nvidia0" and then in the control-dialogue on "open with Kate". Nothing to see there. So I wanted to close the file (okay, the device) again.

There only happens a freeze of the screen, including mouse pointer and keyboard, so I can't change to console and shut down the process or even the computer -> reset button . When I restart Kate after this "/dev/nvidia0" is again there and opened by Kate...

I de-installed and then re-installed Kate, no change. I then tried to find the file where Kate keeps the list of opened files but I couldn't find it ...

Any ideas why Kate does this or what I could do to remedy the situation?

should be something like /home/<you>/.kate

try deleting that dir

Kate is a KDE application, and as such keeps its configuration data under the $HOME/.kde/share/apps/kate/ directory and in the $HOME/.kde/share/config/kate* files.

Yes, it's there, but wouldn't your receipe kill all my preferences in KDE? So I didn't dare use it...

You are right, they are both there. I renamed (./*.old) firstsince "metainfos" sounds like it. No such luck -> hard reboot. Then I did the same to and bingo that was it, no more automatically opened files.

But: I did this as root. So when I tried to re-logon as user I found out that all my users got a nice little popup, sayingNo, not okay. D*mn, check how, what, where?

So I went back as root and run on a hunch and, lo and behold, everything went back to normal.

So, be warned, anybody who tries this.
