Okay, sitting at home now, checking out this hardware before work. Down inthe taskbar, do you have an icon that looks like a PCI card? Its called "suseplugger". Left-click on it, and it will open a device manager. Look through the entries and see if your firewire card shows anywhere. It should show as some sort of IEEE-1394 controller. It maybe under a submenu. Mine falls into the "unknown" category, but it still functions perfectly. Once you find it, you can click on details or configure..
I clicked on details on mine, and found a command that may do something for ya..

Code:
Driver Info #0:
Driver Status: ohci1394 is active
Driver Activation Cmd: "modprobe ohci1394"
try typing "modprobe ohci1394" into the console and see what you get. I assume that this should activate the firewire card if the system hasnt done it already. I remember you had mentioned that Kino claimed the driver wasnt installed or ready, and this command activates the driver.

welcome back, stranger!

slackware is primarily a source-code based distribution (i think).
Your best bet is to compile and install libraw1394 from source. When comiling from source, it includes all the extras that are in the -devel version of the rpm file.

Perhaps some "slacers" will coime along and offer assistance.

later,
