Found a solution

Sorry people,
I shud have done the searchine before posting. The solution of my problem already appeared at the following link.

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...t=java+mozilla

However, Java still refused to work on my Mozilla 1.0.1. But the post gave me an idea about what to do.

I downloaded and extracted the sfx bin version on the j2re. I went to KDE control Panel>Web Browsing>Netscape Plugins.
I added another directory, i.e. the jre directory where the plugin was situated and clicked on Scan Plugins.
Clicked Apply.
Restarted Mozilla and found Java working
