java mozilla plugin

I am trying to get java to work on my mozilla browser and no matter what I do I still get a message that I need to install the plugin, even though I already have.

$ rpm -q j2re

j2re-1.4.2_01-fcs

$ rpm -q jre

jre-1.3.1-fcs

I have also created a link as per the Sun directions from the actual location of j2re-1.4.2_01-fcs to ~/mozilla/plugins

Still, nothing. Any advice? Anyone delt with this problem?

Thanks.

first off, what version of mozilla? run mozilla and do a Help > About. that will help determine where to place the link to the java plugin in. personally, i've never seen any plugin work that was put in ~/.mozilla/plugins. you need to put the link in either /usr/lib/mozilla-XXXX/plugins or /usr/local/mozilla/plugins which is dependant on which version of mozilla you are using and whether you installed mozilla from a distrobution rpm or from the installer from mozilla.org.

edit: forgot to mention to just delete that link you made in ~/.mozilla/plugins

well i need to go to work. so i'll leave you with some guidelines.

if you're using a distro provided version of mozilla, usually it's installation directory will be /usr/lib/mozilla or /usr/lib/mozilla-XXXX where the XXXX is the version number. create the link in that directory's plugins folder, using this plugin:

/usr/java/j2re1.4.2_01/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so

if you're using like the latest version of mozilla installed by mozilla's installer and you chose only the defaults then look in /usr/local/mozilla. the link to the plugin should go in that directory's plugins folder. use this plugin for the link:

/usr/java/j2re1.4.2_01/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so

also the command to run mozilla installed by mozilla's installer is:
/usr/local/mozilla/mozilla
and not just "mozilla"

now i don't use the jre ( i use the sdk) so those paths maybe a little off. you'll need to search around your java installation for the correct directory path if mine are a little off.
