ivtv PVR software suggestions

I'm running ubuntu linux with a hauppauge pvr-150 and ivtv.
Everything works great! but I need a way to capture my S-Video input stream....
I can do a:
Code:
cat /dev/video0 > video.mpg
to get the video, but I would like to be able to view the video aswell as capture it...
I REALLY don't need a fat mythtv setup at all. I don't want to watch tv on this machine... just capture the S-Video stream...
So anything but mythtv
Any suggestions?

I don't have access to my mythbox at the moment to test this, but
in the interest of a quick answer, have you tried mplayer /dev/video0?

Let me know. If this doesn't work, I know there are other solutions
I've used.

but mplayer won't record it.... it only allows me to view. I need to do both at the same time.

You mentioned that you have used cat /dev/video0 >> outfile.mpg. once you start that, you should be able
to do mplayer outfile.mpg, and it will read what's being written.

As mentioned previously, I use mythtv, so it just works for me, but I understand not wanting to do a full mythtv
install just to view the occasional show.

have you looked into vlc?(video lan client)

I haven't tried it for video but Ive used it to capture audio to a file as well as listen to it live as it's recording. Might can do the same for Video
