Installing IDEA and jdk

Hi Friends
I am a total novice when it comes to Linux... I have only installed linux fedora core 3 on my system ... now i want to know two things
1. how do i check the version of jdk that is installed on this system
when i give the command java -version it types out lotta text which doesn't make any sense abt the version to me.
2. i have downloaded the trial version of idea i.e., idea-4.5.3.bin, How do i install it.. i m kinda comfortable with windows installation but can't make anything out of this one.
waiting for ur reply

First, welcome to LQ! Now, your questions:

1. If you didn't install Sun's jdk, chances are it's not on your sistem yet. Check with the following command:
Code:
rpm -qa | grep -i jdk
If it's not installed, head over to java.sun.com and search around for the latest jdk (same place you'd go to get the Windows version, but under the linux heading, choose the self-extracting rpm).

2. I have no idea what this idea software is (no pun intended) but I notice that the install file ends in .bin which means it is some sort of script. Try running the command:
Code:
sh idea-4.5.3.bin
I hope all this helps. Write back if you still have problems.
