Hi guys, Ive got a TNT2 32 MB Graphics card,well the problem was that the display in Linux was always a little blurry,and there was no 3D accelaration,so I decided to get an update for the card,I downloaded the latest drivers from Nvidia.com, killed the X server, and installed the drivers (wow, now Iam going to play games) . Well not so fast, when I tried to login again even after a restart the X server began to crash.
So any ideas guys,how to make the X server work, and how to activate 3D accelaration on my RH9.0 box

Have you edited your XF86Config-4 file to use nvidia driver instead of what you were using, or was it another nvidia driver already.

Have you used modprobe to put the module in the kernel? "modprobe nvidia" without quotation marks

I had the default driver installed (i.e. the one I chose during instalation).And I did not do any of the things you explained.
Could you please tell me how to do them in detail??

First type in the command line:
Then as root open the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file. Find the entry for your video card. For me it's the section under generic videocard cause I haven't named it. Now behind Driver write nvidia between the quotation marks like this:

If you have a new version of the driver (maybe older as well don't know cause I never had to use those) remove GLcore and dri from the section "Module"

You should read the readmes and so on, cause they tell you what to do. In that case, when you finish to install nVidia drivers, they tell you what you must do. If you don't do it, it's quite normal that you run in troubles.... (AKA RTFM!)

Darkleaf, thank you for your advice,but I just want to ask you if I have to uninstal the driver Ive installed or if I just carry out the commands you told me about.


Hammett, thank you too for your advice, I believe that if everyone would read the help and readme files of the applications he is trying to instal, this site wouldnt receive that much traffic and hits.But what you do not know is that Ive got no ftp access,and the read me file of the nvidia driver is on a ftp server,so it is unaccesible for me.

If you've got the driver installed without errors just use the commands. If you got errors try installing it without those errors first

If people read the readme and install files, many of the threads here would be unnecessary, for sure. But this is how you learn to use and to know your computer. This forum (and basically all support forums) should be meant for those people who have tryed to work around the problem without success and they need help from the others. new ideas, new ways to get the problem solved and so on. But the first thing you must do is to try to solve it for yourself, and for that, you need to read those files.
Of course, this is just an opinion and everyone is totally free to agree or not and use the forum the best way the believe.

EDIT:
When you download the driver and run the binarie, at the end of installation it shows you the way to the readme file (/usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/README)
