First you have to unpack the file

tar xvjf packagename.tar.gz

then you have to change into the directory of the package you just unpacked

cd packagename

then do the following:

./configure
make
su
(type in root password)
make install

Do all this in a terminal like "xterm" or whatever you have.

Peace V

Of course the above link in the previous post is better 8^)

If I made the directory called mydirectory and then unpacked everything in. then I after installation is done , is mydirectory where the files gonna actual run from, or mydirectory just a temp that I can delete ?

In linux the rule of thumb is(are)

running "make install" moves the binaries and the needed lib's to their proper place.

so if your PATH has where ever the stuff goes .. you can just type command name and it runs .. you can get rid of this directory business.

normally you shouldn't unless you are pressed for space . .. another rule of thumb is to put source packages in in /usr/src/..... and then just keep themthere till you need the space..
