how do i install software?

I'm very new to linux and am finding it very hard to use at the moment. I have bought a magazine (Linux format UK) and have absolutely no idea how to install software from the cover cd. There is no help how to do this in the magazine and no help in the big Guide To Linux book I have.

Please can someone help me out here? What steps do I need to take? and what is a .tar file?

Put the full magazine name in here so we can avoid buying it lol. Anyway, this thread might be helpful for you:

made by trickykid. I hope it will help you as much as it helped me. TAR is a compressed file, as .zip or .ace. I think you will find more about it at the link I've just gave ya.
Don't give up on Linux... it really is hard at the beginning, but it's worthy. After few months, you will get back booting into Windows and you will see that it just doesn't "feel" right

Good luck and welcome to LinuxQuestions.org!!!
Regards
