where to install software
Hi,
I was installing firefox when firefox asked where to install program files(as its called in windows), i choose my home dir. The installation went smooth. But now i want other user of my computer to able to use firefox. I am using Fedora Core 2. After logging into their dir i was unable to create a link in the panel(the one that contains the redhat symbol-start menu). It was understandable that my files b unaccessible for others. But i want to know where should i install the Program files, so that everybody has a copy of their software. In the case of firefox the users should have their private collection of bookmark, history, etc.
Thank you,
with regards,
ashwin

Either that, or in /opt/firefox
Some distributions place for installed files is in /usr/lib
and some of them it's in /opt
I personally use /opt though my distro seems to put it in /usr/lib
Every distro has an /opt and if the distro doesn't use it for files by default it'll just be an empty directory.

I tend to install things into /usr/lib or /usr/local.
