In search of a program for avi cutting and converting

When I used Windows, I followed this tutorial to create animated gifs from movie files

http://forums.livingwithstyle.com/t1...vie-files.html

What are the alternative programs to use with Linux?

I need to be able to cut and split video files, and save as .gif

Thanks

avidemux is what you want.

There are also kino and lives, but those are mostly for editing video from dv video cameras. And cinelerra which is very resource intensive and takes a little learning to use.
